This is the SAC ACCA Guestbook archive covering 2002-2008. Contrary to what you may have heard, not one entry in the old site's guestbook was lost and the text content has not been edited. There are 136 entries. Enjoy. Jim Bostick

Thanks to Ken for this Guestbook.   Hope that we have many of the former Airborne Command Control folks signing the book and joining us to increase the numbers participating with many others in fostering continued camaraderie in the Association.

As the SAC ACCA historian (again), I'd like to encourage all visitors to this site to not only share your experiences via this medium, but also to contribute any historical source material you might have gathering dust somewhere to our society's Archives.   Old photographs, patches, pamphlets, airframes, etc.--you get the idea.

I'm especially interested in trying to complete a collection of pictures/slides of EC-135 nose art.   Also, I have a personal collection of airborne command & control patches from the various ACCS units, but have had no luck yet acquiring patches from the EB-47L PACCS (4362, 4363, 4364, 4365) outfits.   If you have any of the items listed above but desire to hang on to them, please consider sending photocopies.   Again, welcome to what has turned out to be the sole surviving SAC organization.   I'm sure I speak for all my fellow society officers when I say we are looking forward to your active participation in our club!

Yikes! I forgot to tell you a little about myself.

I joined the PACCS force in 1989 as an ALCS crew dog in the 4 ACCS at Ellsworth.   The Berlin Wall came down a couple weeks after I signed in but that didn't prevent my pulling week-long deployed alerts to Minot about twice a month for the next year or so.

Transferred to 2 ACCS at Offutt in 1992, a couple months before SAC passed the "Glass" to USSTRATCOM.   I was still ALCS but this was a battlestaff position at Offutt.   Saw the first Navy crew member arrive (in fact, I formally trained him in the ALCS CCTS).   Those transition days were confusing for everyone.   In the span of 6 months, I was in three different commands and had five different office symbols--all while doing the same job at the same desk in the same building!   Was actually in the 7 ACCS at Offutt for a short period (I think) before they decided to make the school an operating location of HQ AFSPC (then, later, of 20 AF).   Anyway, I hung up my flight suit in early 1995 to be a "pure" missileer again at Vandenberg and retired in 1999 as commander of ICBM training (AETC).

My flying days were among my best in the Air Force (nothing else can compare to the adrenalin rush one gets from responding to a klaxon, the thrill of beating other aircraft out of the "Christmas Tree," or the exhilarating terror of being in the cockpit as the throttles are pushed up and all that can be seen through the windshield is the black exhaust of the aircraft that you know is right in front of you but you can't see (and you hope to God they aren't aborting!). Elephant Walk anyone?   Ahhh, for the good ol' days!

Served in the 9 ACCS as an RO and communications team chief from 1966-1970.  Flew TDY on the CINCPAC ABNCP to Guam, Japan, Okinawa & the Philippines.  Alex Bosico was our first OIC of Communications and he was replaced by Boyce Pack.  Mike Mahon, Ray Cauble & Gaylord Hart were my NCOICs during those four years.  Ralph Ryon, Chuck Sorrento and Bill Clancy were my instructors and the great Bobby Childress was my supervisor and mentor.

Flew missions with Bobby Childress, Ralph Ryon, Chuck Sorrento, Bill Clancy, Harold Ho, Kay Emerick, Cleveland Colston, Fred Kemp, Bob Kitka, Steve Leazer, Bob Liberty, Virgil Lusk, Bill Meyer, Clyde Moore, Max Goodman, John Yaconni, Frank Thrower, Bob Merriman, Ray Girard, Cyril Martin, Warren Duke, Danny Jones, Jim Reeves, Joe Williams, Louie (Say again your Skyking message!!!) Tirado, Wayne Shockley, Royce Gee, Charlie McDonald, Mack Womack, Tom Courts, Bob Junkelman, Bob Tsukamoto, Joe Haynes, Cecil Shumaker, Ed Nixon, Chuck Armstrong, Charlie Jones, Hal Starnes, Jerry Szyka, Mike Shuster and many more.

Had a great time in 1968 linking up with Looking Glass during a TDY to Andrews AFB, MD.  To my great surprise, Jim Grimm was one of the radio operators on the Glass.  Jim and I flew on C-47s out of Rhein Main AB, Germany during the early 1960s.

The most memorable flight I had was in 1969 when Air Force One linked with our aircraft during their flight to Southeast Asia.

It was a great time to be a WWABNCP communicator.

Stationed at Grissom AFB 1973 to 1979, Flew as radio operator on EC135's L & G.   Prior Grissom, was stationed at Kadena AB and flew Combat Lighting on Razorbacks.   After Grissom assigned to Tinker AFB, flew on E-3's till retirement in 1985.  Out of 30 years in USAF, I spent 18 in SAC and consider all those years as the best.

Hope to make the next year reunion and see some of the old friends.

It sure brings back a lot of memories when you go thru these entries.   So many names from so long ago.   Ken Witkin...great job on the web site.   Jack Suggs...just think, if you hadn't pushed for a 3ACCS reunion way back when, none of this would have happened.

Greg Ogletree...now that we know that we are the only organization left preserving our heritage, think we will be a little better on preservation?   Now its up to us!

Nice site!!  It does bring back memories.  As a former Radio Evaluator on the Glass, I am glad someone has taken the time to preserve such an important part of our Air Force history.  Not that many people really understood the Looking Glass and its mission, but thanks to this site hopefully they will.  SAC is alive and well within the professional military members still on active duty and retired that had the honor to serve and protect America through the WWABNCP / PACCS.

Waco,  Texas----Nov 28, 2002  at  15:17

Certain periods of an individuals life stand out forever in their minds.   This period of time for me was 1968-1977.   I attended the PACCS/Radio Maint. School at Keesler in '68.   My first ABNCP assignment was with the 55AMS PACCS (back then the radio maintenance troops were not a part of the ACCS units).   After only about 5 months at Offutt I moved on to CCK, Taiwan, as part of the Combat Lightning team.   That was probably the most fulfilling time of my A.F. career.

In June of '70, I was reassigned to the 28AMS/PACCS at Ellsworth until '72.   In '72 I became a recruiter but in '75 I came back to Ellsworth to again become part of the PACCS system.   I retired in '86 and went on to become an American History teacher.   Every chance I get, I pontificate about the Air Force and in particular, my times in ABNCP.   I was fortunate to attend one of the reunions of of SAC ACCA in Omaha and it was great.   Thanks for the dedicated efforts guys.   You put in a lot of work and it is appreciated.

Still hale and hearty and working for a living in Waco.   ("Retired" in '85 after 14 years of doing PACCS things at Omaha and Mildenhall.)

Often think of the many people I met and worked with over the years.  It being the holiday season really brings out the nostalgia.

Hope everyone has a wonderful and joyous holiday.

If Hal Starnes has his way, I will eventually make it to a reunion.

Was very glad to see the association develop a web site.   So much can be achieved within the electronic environment these days (sure beats writing long letters).

I too had the thrill of 4ACCS at Ellsworth and the weeeeeeek long tours at Minot (still have visions of the sign above the O'Club door - Only the Best Go North"...also did the ALCS Lugger duties at Offutt followed by tour as Ops Planner on the battlestaff...still believe those to be the best days of my career...good ops mission, great folks in both ACCS units I had the pleasure of serving in, and the many tours with the "new general officers" who eventually went on to higher and greater leadership roles in the AF....all trained very well by the tireless SAC ABNCP staff!...  Had the added pleasure of going back to Offutt to visit my son who was a pilot in the 55th (unfortunately he went to the Dark Side in Recce business and flew those funny looking airplanes).   Had a very nostalgic moment went departed base at the East Gate and saw good ol' A Model 284 now a static display along with a Buff in the small memorial park there at the gate....I guess that is the first sign that your tour is over and time to move on when one of your primary aircraft is now a static display....To the officers and web page team - keep up the great work....both with newsletter and now with the web page.

Just found the site.   Very nice.   Radio operator with 4th ACCS in 70's.   Combat lighting at Utapao.   How about Bruce Stallings, Flip, or Fisher?

Got my commission and had two tours at offutt as CCO.   How about Sam Silvers, Danny Foster, Doug Thacker, Chief McCormick, Chief Connelly?

In sunny Pensacola, but, probably heading to Germany within 1 month.   Another contractor job there.   Just left D.C. area.

Where can we post pictures.   Have quite a few of 4th and 2nd, and Combat Lighting days.

KEEP EM FLYING, thats what we used to say.

I had many WWABNCP tours over my career.

I started with the 6ACCS (one of the first ROs assigned in 74) followed by a move to the 10 ACCS (good folks and mission) then on to the 70 ARS (sorry guys but flying on the relays sucked) then moved on to the 9 ACCS (hey, someone had to do it) ended up at Ellsworth and the 4th ACCS (my most challenging and rewarding assignment).   Now, as a contractor, working on requirements for the MC2A (767 multi-sensor command and control aircraft).   As we formalize mission requirements, I can't help but thinking we are re-developing portions of the WWABNCP mission.   The PACCS and WWABNCP may be a part of history but their legacy lives on. Thanks for the memories.

I started flying as a battlestaff EA controller at Silk Purse in Jan 67.   Remember all the RON's all over Europe. After Mildenhall went to 7ACCS in Udorn,1971.   Then 3ACCS at Grissom, 1972&3.  Then came a hardship tour to Blue Eagle from 73 to 77.   Then it was back to the 7ACCS at Keesler till Oct 79.   I enjoyed knowing and working with the all the communicators, battlestaff members, maint techs, in the PACCS System.   It seems like we all went from one airborne unit to the other and it was really a close knit community.

I am now working in a MERS Unit for FEMA in Denton, TX.   I am planning on retiring next Dec when I turn 65 and can draw full social security.  I have a new Bass boat that only has 24 hours on it, and that will change.

Ken, You have a good web page, thanks.  You might add a 3ACCS on the opening page.   I have an old patch if you need it.

It was really good to see the names of all the people you knew and flew with.   Keep on chunking.

Great site!

I was a CSO in the 4th ACCS Ellsworth: '80 - '83, 10th ACCS RAF Mildenhall: '83 - '88, moved on to Keesler as a Tech School Instructor, then weaseled my way over the the 7th ACCS.   Did the unit move which become the 42 ACCS out at D-M, AZ. Good times all!   I think the craziest times were held at Ellsworth though!

Great bunch of guys!  Casavan, Cadola, Meldje, Jones, Elder, Tic-Tac, Buck, Pearson, Blica, Hamil, Gandy & the list goes on!!!  Cheers Guys!!!

Great site, thanks Mad Dog.

Yes I was a PACCS Puke for a long time.   Hitched up with Tiny Somborn back in 1975 at Ellsworth AFB SD.   They just didn't come any better than that guy.   Every party the crew dogs got to listen to Tiny Bubbles.   Learned how crew dogs partied here.   Thanks to guys like Craker, Stallings, Fishhead, Flip, Dewey, and the list is just to long to go on.

Went to 9ACCS in 1978.   Really learned how to go TDY here.  Again thanks to guys like Ed Nixon, Dewey Hardee, Lobo, Frank Hall, Don Wick, Taco, and so on.

Got out for a year and a half and then came back to Ellsworth.   Melde, Jones, Helland, Nixon, Heiser, Buck Amy, Stenerson, Martone, Plueger.   Whats sad is I just can't name all the people.   Special thanks to Chief Saterwhite, still sober and you helped out a lot.   Moved on to Grissom.   Greatretirementt base and was able to work on my golf game.   After a trip to the desert for the Storm it was a good time to punch out.   What a career and the people are the best in the world bar none.

I work for Daimler Chrysler and these people have no clue what a team is and what true friendship means.   I missed so many names like Mike Hummel, Sherry, Pullans, Chief Shockley, Billy Lucas, and so on.

A special prayer for our brothers in the sky, Tiny Somborn, Ducky Dunn, Mike Heiser, Dave Cousin, Ken Sebren, Larry Duhamme, and I'm sure I missed a few.   Now thats some supper crew dogs.   I'm ready for a mass reunion.   Can't sign off with out a special partner Buck Lewis.   I'm sure there is those who thought we would never make it.   I missed so many names so if you feel slighted feel free to e-mail me and rip me a new one.

Man o' Man where does one start!  When a person flies with professionals such as the "Glass" carried, you can't mentioned all the ones you miss.

I was a Data Operator from Jan 90 to March of 94.   I was there to see the fall from 24 hour flying to random 8 hour flights.   From pulling alert at an alert facility then trailers next to NEACP, if memory serves we even used NEACP's facility for awhile.  Anyone remember tying Nesbitt up with duct tape and carrying him around for an alert tour?   You can't help but miss the crazy stunts we all pulled.

This is a great site and a true tribute to the real "Cold Warriors."

It is good to know PACCS is still on someone’s mind.   I have always considered my assignment to PACCS as the highlight of a 33-year military career.

I arrived at Offutt in April 1966 after a four and a half year tour in Europe and was assigned to the PACCS in the 1st Aerospace Communications Group.  Jack Cothran was the NCOIC and Bill Tate was the Operations NCOIC.   (Actually Bill ran the outfit).    Bill assigned a TSgt by the name of Ducky Dunn to show me around the aircraft and teamed me up with CMSgt Al Findley, which was my lucky day.   He must have written the book on the MUX.   However it was not long before AL was transferred to Croughton Airways in England.  (Visited him there in 1973.)   Then I was teamed up with Bruce Pettit who was just a good as Al.

Toward the end of 1966 Bruce & I volunteered to go TDY to Utapo to fly Combat Lightening.  The trip over was hilarious, but we made it.  Jim Duff and SSgt Cole, both from Stepmother, joined us.  We were there for six months when the PCS personnel started arriving.  The NCOIC was to be George Harmon.  After a couple of rides I checked him out  (The first standbord to be given on Combat Lightening) and all the TDY personnel returned to their bases.

Late 1967 brought a lot of changes.   Bill Tate and Jim Nesbit were transferred to a new EC-121 Recon outfit at Otis and I was made NCOIC of Operations (due to attrition, not expertise).  Then after the first of 1968 it was my turn.  Charlie Britt (who was PACCS NCOIC by this time) and myself were transferred to Otis.   Don Wilson from Stepmother was also assigned to the Recon Wing.  Then the entire Recon Wing transferred to Korat, Thailand.   I returned to the ZI in October 1968 and was assigned to Grissom as NCOIC PACCS Axel unit, before 3rd ACCS was formed.  I left Grissom in July 1970 for Headquarters USAFE in Wiesbaden, retiring in 1974 from Barksdale.

As I said before, my tour of duty in PACCS stands out over all assignments I had during my Air Force career.    The personnel I have named here, and other radio operations personnel assigned to PACCS at that time, were instrumental in establishing operational procedures that would allow PACCS to continue on its course in becoming such a success.   All PACCS personnel were truly professionals.

Greeting to all fellow PACCS crew dogs.....

I had my little slice of heaven from 1989 to 1992 with 4th ACCS at Ellsworth.   No other assignment compared to it.   The times were great, even the Phase II to Common/DAISS transition.   You want weird, here's weird.   Try pulling alert first in a Phase II, having it break, then on to a Common bird, having it break, then back to the same "now repaired" Phase II bird.   Throughout all the alerts, and flights I would have to say my favorite bird was 0262.   This old girl had been struck by lightning while in the fuel pit, run off the runway (bending the airframe) and yet kept coming back time and again.   No matter what, she would always bring you home.   Now a museum piece in South Dakota. Definitely the best of times...

I was assigned to the 34th ARS IN July of 60.  I think there were 10 of us, don't know who is left.  Al Hurst was NCOIC.  Al and I were in the same outfit during the Korean War.  We were in the 22nd TCS..C54 outfit.  A lot of flying was done by all.   I rotated out in Oct of 51

I met Don Wilson in Jan., 1948.  I was assigned to the 509th Bomb Gp, 715 Bomb Sq.  Don was my NCOIC..I was a crew member on a B-29.  Long hrs in the air and a lot of flying.  There aren't many of us WW2 guys left.  My service dates were July 41 to Oct 45.  Then Dec. 47 to March 31, 67.

Flying in 'Looking Glass" didn't take us long to get our 2000 hr pin..Dunn, Miller, McClain, Snyder myself and quite a few others.  Operation "Dominic" was interesting.   Duke Syder and myself got to see the results when a "nuke" was detonated in the sky.  We were backup and the first plane was struck by lightning in the nose cone.  We took off and did the mission.  Duke and I had the back of the plane all to ourselves.

I wonder if "Woody" is still around?  When we went TDY to train the Night Watch people, he was NCOIC of the ROs'.  That was an interesting trip!  Jack Cothran and I were on alert in the trailer when the "klaxon" went off.  We dashed to the a/c and got on board.  Gen LeMay came on board...We took off to take him to DC.  In the excitement, someone forgot to take the pin out of the nose wheel.  We flew to DC with the nose wheel down..

Lots of memories....  Talked to Ray Wilson last week.   He had a stroke 3 years ago, he's in tough shape but his attitude is great.  He will be 80 in a couple of months.   I'll be 80 in Oct.  When I retired in 67, I was hired by the Boeing Co. in Seattle.  Worked in Flight Test in the radio support group.  Good job and traveled quite a bit.  Got to work with all the new aircraft, etc..  Took Dunn out for dinner when he came out on a TDY trip..Lots of memories .......I'm retired here in Sun Lakes Az., a retirement community south of Phoenix...been here 14 years.  Still married to the same gal I married in 1946..

I am one of the founding committee members who got the SAC/ACCA going in 1993.  It is very gratifying to see the interest being shown through Ken Witkin outstanding web site.

The purpose of this entry, however, is to learn if any of you Looking Glass folks (front end, comm, battle staff, or anywhere on the airplane) from June 1963 until about 1971.   Remember flying with an AC/IP Major/LtCol Paul E. Smallwood.  Paul arrived at Offutt in Jun 63 and served in 34AREFS and 38SRS in the Glass until he went into the recon end of the 55SRW in 1970-71.   He retired from the USAF and flew with FedEx until very serious health problems permanently grounded him.

Paul's family would like to learn anything of interest about his flying career during the Glass period.   I am a close personal friend, but I never flew with him.   One incident that I heard of, indirectly, involved a very hairy air refueling of the Glass in miserable weather conditions.   I do not know anything more than these basics, but if any of you can provide details of this or any other item of interest about him, please post it here or send to me at Jgatew@aol.com.

Thanx, in advance.

About me:  Played around from 66-81 as variously, a Civil Engineer heating shop guy who then X-Trained into ground radio in 73, where I went to FireSide One (and first talked to Ken, supporting HeadDancer).  Moved to Scott for a year, then worked for Denzel W. on the ground in Osan 75-76.   Served as a 293 instructor at Keesler from 76-81 where I helped write the initial curriculum for the airborne radio school, and fleshed out the first A293 classroom with the best of my graduates Sherry, Doug D., Lori, Schwake, among others, from the ground school.   Went through the school as a student before going to 2ACCS, Offutt in the spring of 81.   Got to work with Sam, Hey-Joe, Charlie, the Indian, Doug Thacker, Chris, Col. Dick Doolittle, Jim Graham, CT Townsend - So many names and faces.   I'll never forget how proud I was the day Hey-Joe told me he had nominated me for SEFE!   In 85 went back to Keesler, to the 7th ACCS first to Cricket, then as Superintendent of AlleyCat, until 1989.   I finally convinced folks that I didn't like the noisy Lockheed Tri-Motored Vibrator (like as not to come home with one caged), and they let me go back to my first love, the 'C' model where we eventually got to fly with all the great crew dogs from Grissom and the 4th, 6th, 9th and 10th ACCS when they stood down.

My thanks to my friends and loyal staff; Jerry, Larry, Dianne (where are you, girl?), Jeff, and the unique Dan Dieterman.   I finally retired (after helping take down the 24 hour airborne) mission (***), kicking and screaming all the way out the gate in 91 after serving as Superintendent of Operations, and good cop/bad cop with Dave Coombs, a privilege that humbles me to this day (not you, Dave, the other part 8~) ).   To all of you who worked with me, and supported me, and to 583, in which I received both my dollar ride and my final wet-down nearly 5000 hours later, I salute you.

*** A footnote if you will indulge me a moment:   Remember how miserable it was when we could NEVER fill a schedule without stompin on somebody's break/leave/crewrest [YIKES!!]?   How many of you remember the great good time we had when the WWABNCP/PACCS stood down and EVERYBODY was suddenly at Offutt screaming for seat time?  What a flying cluster THAT was!   OK. Rant over.

On my count, 1 - 2 - 3 . . .

Wow, what a great site.   "Thanks" Ken for your outstanding effort on the Guestbook..a superb job.

I always amazed at the names I've found and the comments contained in this Guestbook which bring back fond memories of places I've been and people I've had the pleasure to work with.   We all learn lessons as we go thru life and since I retired from the Air Force, the lesson I have learned is that my time in the Air Force were the best days of my life, bar none.   My post-Air Force days have been interesting with their own unique challenges, but nothing compares to the satisfaction of being a part of the Air Force.

My first assignment in the airborne world was with the 31st Comm Squadron at Offutt AFB, NE.   I recall names such as Jim Maxson, Willie Pellitier, John Ostronic, Wayne Benton, W.C. Smith, and John Ralston, my instuctor.  I'm glad that was my first job in the airborne field.   I feel these gentlemen gave me the best start I could have had in the career field.

After a short stay at Offutt, I was reassigned to Hickam AFB, the 6486 ACCS which became the 9ACCS, shortly after I arrived there.   Ken Witkin and I became acquaintances and friends during this assignment.   Again, other names I remember from Hickam were Ray Cauble, Bobby Childress, Jim Reeves, Joe Haynes, Steve Thoma, Ed Nixon, Walt Gottschalk, Clyde Moore, Wayne Bridgham (our Comm Team Chief for Crew 7).   By the way, Clyde Moore was responsible for introducing me to the FLIP document which put me on track for assignments requiring proficiency in those pubs.

From the 9th ACCS, I had a short assignment with the 8TDCS at Seymour Johnson AFB, NC.   Ken and I were stationed there together, 1974-75, I believe, but after some problems with our "C" suffix shredout, I caught an assignment to the 2146 Comm Group at Osan AB, Korea in the basic AFS for a year.   Had never been remote before, so this was my time in the barrel.  Fortuately, I was able to return to the 9th ACCS at Hickam once more for another 7 years which passed all too quickly.

After Hickam, I was reassigned to Headquarters ARRS at Scott AFB, IL, but before I arrived, they had redesignated it Headquarter 23AF which included not only all of rescue, but also the newly acquired special operations units from TAC.  So...I retrained in the HC-130 and the MC-30 and upgraded to MAC instructor and SEFE.   One benefit about being at Scott was being able to augment the HQ MAC Aircrew Stan/Eval Team during field inspections.   Had a great time doing that and visiting the DV units, both stateside and overseas (Hickam and Germany).   I was able to do a lot of visiting with old friends I had worked that had become outstanding airborne communicators.

After a couple of years at Scott, we relocated 23rd AF to Hurlburt Field, FL, where we stood up the Air Force Special Operations Command.  With this job, I had the pleasure of working with many superb airborne operators from both Rescue and Special Operations.   Some of the fellows that leave lasting impressions with you, i.e., Sam Garret, Joe Black, Dennis Pylmale, Bob Gitthens, Roger Gill, Bob Mederios, Randy Gingrich, John Thomas and others in both our Guard and Reseve units.

It's been a my pleasure to have be associated with such a fine group of individuals.   I know there are many names I haven't included (CRS Can't remember _hit!) thoughout my Air Force time, so I would like to say "Thanks" for their help and assistance in the past.  And if I could do it all over again, the answer would be a definite "Yes, where and when do we start."

Best Regards....

It's so great to see this site and so many guys I shared fear and beer with still around.   I was an RO with Data Operator tendencies with the 6th ACCS from 1978 to 1986.   Some great times there and some great people.   "Bobby J." Manning, Willie Speight, Ed "Ski" Radwanski (the the greatest chef to hook up a crock pot on an EC).   I loved going TDY with you bud.   Learned a lot there, and moved on up north to the 4ACCS at Ellsworth from '86 til the last alert.   That was definitely a challenging and rewarding tour.

Going from the "Country Club" at Langley to the frozen tundra of Ellsworth and pulling 7 day alerts can wake you up a bit.   But through it all I managed to have fun and learn a little too.   Bobby Stinnett, Bill Owens, "DU" Duhaime, Mike Hummel, (who taught me to use a computer), Mike Pohl, Buck Lewis, Kevin Spiller, Larry Foy, Greg Grieser, Bobby Grier, helped me keep and sometimes lose my sanity up there.   The times with the ACCS were good and should always be remembered.   We did something, most folks couldn't, wouldn't and most of all didn't.   I am still proud of that.

God bless, and don't forget the good times.

All of you guys are great.  Ken outstanding Site.!!!!!  I remember a lot of names that are listed here and hopefully there will be more.  I was the first Enlisted guy assigned to Blue Eagle Battle Staff as EANCO Controller.  Arrived in Hawaii in June of 65 and left in June of 70.  Was on Team 1.  We had an Army Col Bechtel as BS Commander and he was a trip and that is all I am going to say about that.  Some of you can relate to that.  In 1967 I was assigned to Team 7 which was the Standardization and Training Team for the Battle Staff.

After tour with Blue Eagle went to Nellis as NCOIC of the Command Post and then to Langey 48 FIS and to Vietnam as NCOIC of the Rescue Center for SEA.  Moved from Siagon to NKP.   Came to Hq TAC, Langley AFB, VA as NCOIC of the TAC Command Post and flew TDCA mission with the 8thTDCS out of Seymour until 1977 when I retired.

The guys that were assigned to 9ACCS in Hawaii, were great.  I learned a lot from them and enjoyed flying with them.  All the folks that Ken mentioned are a great bunch of guys and made my job very easy and rewarding.  I know we lost some good friends when one of the 8TDCS aircraft went into a mountain in New Mexico.

I saw that some one mentioned an RO Bobby J Manning.  I was forunate to be stationed with him in Harlingen, Texas from 1956 thru 1960.  He was a Radio Operator on T-29 aircraft, which was used to train Navigators.  Bobby J, trained me as a Radio Operator, so that I could fill in when they were short operators or when they had Hurricane Evac.  Super guy!!!!!

Well I have rattle on here too much.   All I can say is that you ROs, TTY Operators, Boomers, Pilots, Navs, crew chiefs and maintenance guys that took care of your airplanes--Thanks for everything and bringing us home safe and sound so that we could be here now as retired folks writing to each other.   God Bless You, God Bless our troops and God Bless America.

PS.   If any of you are ever at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg, VA, check out the Steam Trains cause you may see me up there as the Engineer.   Love the job.  This is my 10th year.

Thanks, Ken for the great web page and guest book.  Don't believe I have ever seen one like it anywhere.

Started my PACCS work with "Seabell" from "67 thru early '70.   Left there there for the 28th ARS at Ellsworth and then in the early spring we started the 4th ACCS.   A lot of good friends and times in the guest book here.   Also did time with "Wager" at Okie.   Boy what a time, even the typhoon parties.   Also did my time with the "Glass", Ducky, Sam, George, Chris and the bunch. Retired out of there the end of '75.   Still go back for an annual hunting trip with some of the old gang.   Still have the ole" CP, Darrell Sauder there.

Thanks again for an excellent Web page/Guest book.

Great site.  Have not really kept up with the old SAC group.  I served with the 3ACCS at Grissom from the time they moved to the base 1969? until 1971.  Before that was with the 305th Field Maintenance Squadron at the same base.  I was an aircraft maintenance officer on B-58s and KC-135s at Grissom.  When the 3ACCS came to the base somehow I got into that great unit and really enjoyed it.  Served as a Logistics officer in PACCS.

Wondering what ever happend to MSGT Don Keelen.  Have kept in touch with Dave Hixson who was also a Logistics officer.

Went "civilian" in 1971 and worked as Director of Marketing for a global company and moved on to magazine publishing.  I am now semi-retired and building a new carreer becasue I can't stand to just not do anything.

Would love to hear from some old 3ACCS people.

Flew as a controller on Hillsboro at Udorn 1970-71, and Moonbeam 1972-73 out of Korat.  Every time I think of Thailand I get tears in my eyes, and it's not because of the great guys I flew with, but the beautiful sights downtown, if you know what I mean.  Being single, and rich (you on flying status?) was about as good as it gets in this lifetime.

Oh what I would give to get back to the Bamboo Hut in Udorn, or the Korat Hotel, or just anywhere over there.  Of course the guys were great and I will never forget some of the best. A.T. Walls (God rest his soul), Big Jim Newby, Jack Payne, Jack Webb, Ken Witkin, Jim Nesbit, Hank (Noodle) Nolde (who's still wandering around the pacific in a drunken fog of memories, God help him).  There were so many I can't name them all.

Went on to Grissom and from 1973-75 flew as an Emergency Actions controller under the mentorship of the great Carl Bryant.  One of the main things I learned from Carl was, don't get in a speed boat with him.  And one thing he learned from me was, don't go fishing with Charlie Poole, Rick Johnson, Bob Cannady, Pat Maloney, etc. when they have a jug of Rick's homemade wine.  Met a lifetime friend, Rocky Rocheford through bass fishing, as well as Joe Haynes. and others.  Also will never forget the "dirty Floor" and the great sausage sandwiches.

Left for Offutt and the Glass when the 3ACCS folded in 75 and flew as Force Status until 78.  More great folks too numerous to remember, but some were, Cecil ?, promoted to SSgt more times than anyone in history, Lee Morgan, Al Buckles Ducky Dunn, Gene Fishback, LTC Bruce Currington, and many more I can't remember by name right now.

Came to Keesler to the Command and Control Course in 78, retired in 82 as a MSgt, and now a training specialist nearing retirement.  Ken and others, you have done a great job with this site.  My check for membership went in today.

Greetings to all.  Visiting this web site has been nothing short of passing through a time warp for me!  Thanks to Ken Witkin for his efforts towards maintaining this web site.

I was an RO1 in 2ACCS - Offutt - from Nov. '77 to Jun '80.   (Prior to that, I was stationed at Elkhorn, NE, as a communications specialist for the SAC Giant Talk/Green Pine systems.)  Hello to Tate, Hal, Sam, and many of the others listed throughout this web site.  It's great to be brought up to date on everyone's lives.

When I left the Air Force in '80, I went to nursing school at UNO, then moved to New Mexico.  I've been a nurse in various specialties since - mainly the emergency department.  Now I work for McKesson as a clinical product consultant.  Curiosity and the need for a different "adrenaline rush" prompted me to change career paths as a New Mexico State Police officer for 3 short, but power-packed years.

I'm blessed to have a wonderful wife - Evelyn -for 14 years, two boys - Jacob, 7 y/o, and Andrew, 6 y/o.  We home school our boys here in Ruidoso, NM.  We live in the mountains and enjoy a very rural style of living.

Thanks to all for sharing such vivid memories and stories.  My wife has enjoyed a gained perspective towards my history and that of our country's history.

I look forward to any future correspondance - especially with those who flew with me from 2ACCS.  Hope to be at the 2004 reunion.

God bless.

Just joined SAC ACCA and see a lot of familiar names in the Guestbook entries.  Am still working for the State of South Dakota as an Engineer.  Have stayed in contact with Chris McCormack, Bob McIntyre, and Ted Boyer.   I run into Bruce Pettit in Rapid City sometimes.  He has had a bad time lately with his back.  Good to see some of the old timers still kicking.  Am planning on the reunion at Omaha in 04.  Those I have worked with, drop me an email.

I have been living here in Florida ever since I left Grissom AFB.  I kept in contact with Womack for a while but he doesn't seem to be in the book any more.  I have moved twice since I got out of the AF at MacDill.  Moved from living in Brandon, Fl to the country in Wesley Chapel in Pasco to San Antonio, Fl which is just 5 miles from where I used to live at Wesley Chapel.  I saw the notice from Fred in one of my books but had to wait several months to see it come back again.  Going to try and make this reunion if things stay the way they are right now health ways.

Flew on the Glass from 78-83 as an RO-1 and was trained by the best, Danny Foster, Joe Haynes and the man with the ax--Charlie.  What a great time while at Offutt.  Met some great folks there.  But all things had to come to an end.  PCS'd to MC-130E's (Combat Talons), 7th Special Operations Squadron, in '83 at Rhein Main AB, Germany until '87.  Ran into one of my old trainee's there, Steve Levine.  HEY STEVE, remember when I pulled some of the mux out on a 3 and told you that you just lost your link?  Went to the 8th SOS in '87 until '90 and got to do some interesting stuff, like planning the comms for Just Cause.  Best time I had in the Air Force was flying.

Been in Colorado since '90 until retirement in '96 and now am Civil Service working at US Northern Command doing Homeland Defense stuff and also working on experiments on connecting other agencies within the Federal Gov't and State/Local first responders.  Maybe one day I'll run into some of the old bowling team now working in FEMA since I am talking with Headquarters FEMA on an almost daily basis.  Great times had by all at the 2ACCS, expecially the Pig Roast we had every year.  I'm still amazed that it actually got cooked, since the main function of cooking it all night was to drink.

Look forward to hearing from some old friends

Well I thought I'd put my 2 cents in here since I found another website dedicated to the PACCS recently and I chimed in there.

Whew!   I've seen a lot of names I remember from "my previous life", and they bring back a lot of memories.

I did 10 years in Blue, and every DAMN of them at Offutt.  Still don't know who I have to "thank" for that but when I find you......... WE GONNA HAVE A "CHAT".  Don't misunderstand, I'm proud of my service and of all the things I got to do.  I flew 3300+ hours in my first 3 1/2 years with the 1850th/2nd ACCS but then I had the privelege of being the first "Ground Sortie 351" when President Bush grounded the "Glass".  There were a lot of us who were happy about that at the time as we were humpin' the line pretty hard up to then.  I remember one MSGT "Andy" Rodriguez tellin' me that I'd long to go back to the old days.  BOY WAS HE RIGHT!   It just wasn't the same after things changed.

After 8 1/2 years they shipped my behind across the street to the 1ACCS.  After a year and a half of that I had enough.  Punched out in June 1996, went to school a couple of years in South Dakota and got into the TV biz.  Bounced around for a bit and finally settled in Indianapolis and I'm currently working in Master Control at WTHR Channel 13 (NBC).

Well that's my story in an over-sized nutshell.  If you remember me (and you know you do!) and are ever in town for a race or whatever, look me up, I'm in the book.

Take Care.

F-Guy OUT!

Flew on Glass as RM from 82-86 and NEACP from 85-92.  Enjoyed both airframes, the flying, and the missions.  Knew Don Libby.  Quiet, reserved fellow.  I live in MS and after seperating from the USAF joined the Air Guard.  Say what you want about the Guard.  In 1993 they still had beer machines.  I am a Network Analyst for the US Army Corp of Engineers in Vicksburg, MS.  Also do this network stuff for the Air Guard in Meridian.  Remember how dumb we were when we thought nuclear annihilation was a threat?  I could live with that threat any day of the week over these misguided towel-headed SOB's.

Hey Ken.

Great job.  But of course you were ex-PACCS.  Could we expect more?

Started in 65 as Blue Eagle RM.  Name "GOOFY" given to me the day I arrived by good old Olle White, bless his soul.  He passed on at Wilford Hall.  I think Frank Thower was at his side.

I went on to Offut 68 to Feb 71 then to Mildenhall.  I didn't fly there.  Then to the 6 ACCS until I retired in 81 when we lost 007 to that fire on the pad.  It was like loosing an old friend.

I enjoyed reading all the notes from old PACCSers but didn't want to be the first old RM to report in for the "beer party" crowd.

After I got out, I worked for an electric generating plant here in south Texas.  Quit for good.  Now just watching the grass grow or not.

As many have said, 13 years that I couldn't have worked with better people.

Things that stick in one's mind (and nowdays that's not much) is like the time the LOOKING GLASS Battle Staff was loading.  But Me?  I was changing a switch at the RO position.  With my legs out in the isle between the seats.  When someone stepped on my chin-ouch!  "YOU HAD BETTER BE THE BIGGEST #$%^&&@* on this plane when I get out of here or we are going a round or two".   The plane was very quiet as I stood up and looked aft as this 6 foot 2, two-star general asked, "Will I Do Sarge?"  'I guess you will do'--as the plane broke out in laughter.   That kind of stuff made all the long hours and tense moments worth it.

Wow!  How this site has brought back such great memories.  I had the distinct pleasure to fly with guys like Dick Doolittle, Sam Silvers, Danny Foster, Joe Haynes, and of course Chris McCormick from 79 to 81.  I also can claim to be one of the few who had the opportunity to fly the first (and only) glass mission on the E4...and if any of you are out there who were on that flight...it was a heck of a lot nicer "doubling" on the E4 than 135.  Hope to hear from some of my long lost "friends"....

Found this forum browsing around the net.  Recognized some names so I thought I'd drop it a line (as I stare at 046 taking off I use as the background on my PC at work).  I was an RO on the Glass (Machine of Love) from beginnings of '89 to March of 94, (one of Big Rod's protege's) then bolted to the 7th ACCS (ABCCC) only for it to become the 42ACCS, then the 2nd becomes the 7th....what's up with that?....anyway, never quite made it to Keesler...shucks...(can you feel the sarcasm dripping?) cuz was diverted (there's a familiar word for some of us, huh?) to D-M, since that's where the 7th was moving.  So, I did the ABCCC thing from March 94 until I ejected from service in the summer of 98.

I am currently working as a Structural Drafter out of Sacramento, CA.  I tell ya though, I think about those days often, and sometimes wish I can go back in time and do it all over again.  Maybe that time, I'd be able to appreciate it a little more.  Those were some good times with some good people.  I was in the young crowd for those who might remember names like Jeff Haley, Russ Zachrison, Mike Kufrovich, Dave Rumpke, and who can forget Renee Schmidt?  And here's a shout out to some of boys over at the enemy side of the House (you NEACP people): Dollar and Whittington (Should they ever come across this site.)

Well, enough ramblin.  PEACE!!

Great Site!  Was lot's of fun seeing some old and familiar names.  I started my flying career as a Radio Operator with the 4th ACCS from Spring of 85 until 90.  Lot's of good folks and good times--people like Casavan, Plueger, Buck, Quiroz, Martone, Stenerson, Nancy Mont and the list could go on for ever.  Nothing like pulling a few alerts to really get to know the folks on your team.

After leaving the ACCS, I went overseas to Germany in the 7th SOS flying the MC-130E (Talon) and was introduced the wonderful world of AFSOC.  Following my overseas "vacation" PCS'd to Eglin AFB and flew the HC-130N/P's (Shadow-birds) and have been here ever since.

Hi all!

I've been away from the WWABNCP/PACCS community for a long time now.  I cross-trained from Avionics Communications into PACCS radio maintenance field at Keesler in 1979/80.  I spent six years at Ellsworth (1980-1986) in the 55th AMS (Avionics Maint. Sq.), followed by six years at Hickam (1987-1992) in 15th CAMS (Consolidated Aircraft Maint. Sq.).  During that twelve years I was on flying status for 10 years.  I spent my fair share of time on alert at Ellsworth and Minot for SAC, and at March and Hickam for PACAF/PACOM.  After leaving Hickam I spent four years in 1st ACCS (1992-1996) at Offutt.  I retired in June, 1996.

I have many fond memories of my years as an RMT.  I had the pleasure of being on alert at March AFB when President Clinton ordered the stand-down of the SAC bomber alert force.  I had the sadness of being present at Offutt AFB when SAC itself stood down and was replaced by Strategic Command and Air Combat Command.  Then there was the time I got promoted while I was TDY and my squadron forgot to tell me for three days!

These days I'm an information security analyst (aka Local Area Network Administrator) for one of the local banks.  All those days of playing computer games on alert finally paid off!

Warm regards to all!

Was looking for information on the internet regarding Looking Glass, ABNCP or Blue Eagle and found this site.  Went on flying status with the 4th ACCS in 1973 and flew with that unit as a Radio Operator, mostly ALCC time at Minot, and a short stint in Thailand (U-tapao) until my assignment to Hickam AFB with the 9th ACCS (Blue Eagle).  Tiny Somborn got me to come back to Ellsworth from Hawaii, and I retired while stationed there.  Only on flying status from 1973 to 1980 but consider those the best years of my Air Force career.

Greetings!  Just discovered your association and will be sending in my dues to join shortly.  I was in 4th ACCS as an Airborne Missile Ops Commander/Instructor from 1986-1989, and served with Greg Ogletree (who I see is your historian).  I'm trying to contact Greg, and would appreciate it if I could get his e-mail address so I can shoot him a message.  Glad to see there is an organization dedicated to preserving the history of PACCS.

Sincerely,

Lew Parrish

Found your website!  Wow!

I miss my days as an RM1/RM2/TC1/TC2/SHF/Wire guy!

Currently stationed at Nellis at Thunder AMU (A-10's).

Was up in Predator world, went to Iraq/Afganistan and got my butt shot at for 5 months!  Made it home ok and YES it was worth it.  If I could I'd be back tomorrow!  Anyway lots of names from the past!

Merceda CLifford, Pete Wentzler, Don Libby, Larry Springer, Todd Vanderwerken, Steve Bottorff.  Does anyone know where Mr. Richard Good (last known location Mildenhall) is?  anyway...later.

Sincerely Roy Cupper

Great book.

I was assigned to the 34th AREFS from 1964 until we moved to Pease in 1966.  Had the pleasure of flying on "Looking Glass" as a Boom Operator many times.  My Nav was a 2nd Lt. named Tom Nuzum.  If anyone knows where he is, please let me know.

I retired from the AF in 1978.

Came across this site looking for aviation art.  Flew with PACCS at Grissom and 6th ACCS at Langley (Boom Operator).  Any words on a 6ACCS reunion?  I just moved here from Charlottesville,Virgina to a new job with the Air Force.  ( I am detached from the 3rd MI BT for a couple of years with the AeroSpace Data Facility, at Buckley, AFB).  Anyone in the Denver/Co. Springs area please contact me.  Its allways fun to see old friends and meet new ones.

Great Site, thanks Tate.  Was with 4th ACCS from 74-77, ALCC side.

Great pleasure seeing some familiar names, Tiny, Dewey, Jerry, Flip, etc, all great people in the entries.  Went from SAC to the 1st SOS, flying MC-130E's at Kadena AB, Okinawa for 3 years and from there spent my last year with the 8th SOS, Hurlburt Field, FL.  Kept seeing Jerry Boisen while he was stationed in Hawaii.  Now retired from being the dispatcher supervisor for the Manteca Police Dept.

Would like to hear from any who was stationed at Ellsworth.

Enjoyed browsing your site.  I was a Boomer assigned to the 2 ACCS and the 55 SRW from 1981 through 1989.  I see quite a few names I remember from those days I was on the Glass with the front end crew.

Greetings all-  Just a brief update.  I retired from the MS Air National Guard last January a year ago after nearly 27 years of service to the USAF in one way, shape, or form.  I also recently left my position with the US Army Corps of Engineers in December '07.  This marks the first time since I was 20 that I have absolutely no work affiliation with the DoD.  As Stoney would say, "Hey PJ, you braggin or complainen?".

My new job has me traveling quite often and I've actually run into Delta Airlines Pilot and former Glass CP, Mark Chancey and former Glass NAV turned Delta Connection (ASA) Pilot Jan Maas.

Happy New Year and all that. -PJ

I was with the airborne command post at Seymour Johnson AFB in 1971 and 1972.  I was primarily assigned to aircraft 55-3118 and have always wondered what happened to the aircraft.  I saw one of the aircraft when I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall from 1978 to 1982.  At that time I was an aircraft and FE instructor for 513th TAW assigned to 908th FTD.  I remember a lot of polishing and cleaning on 118.  I do remember that the commanding officer was a Lt Col Buck.  I can go on about how we built and rebuilt the inside of this aircraft.

Thank you.

My Father Joseph Youcheff was part of the crew on the E-4B NECAP (National Emergency Airborne Command Post).  Part of Nightwatch.   He loved the job he had in the Air Force being a part of that crew.  He was stationed at Andrews AFB and Offutt AFB before retiring in 1979.  Prior to that we lived in several states.  I have photo's of the E-4B plane and a photo of him meeting then Vice President Mondale.  Unfortuatly my father died in 2003 at the age of 63 after a long battle with colon cancer.  He would of liked this site.  Any one who remembers him I'd like to hear from.

Best regards,

Looking at some of the old pictures.  In the picture of the old battle staff EC-135 photo.  For your info in the background of the picture--that is me standing behind Reios and Gregerson.  I was working with them to learn the SAC communications system.  I don't know how many of the original 10 RO's are left.  Al Hurst, our first NCOIC, is no longer with us.  I can name some others  Do you know who is left???  I will be 85 in Oct.  I was with the Airborne Command Post from July 1960 to March 31,1967-- when I retired.

I went to work for Boeing in Seattle.  Had a nice job in the radio support group in Flight Test.  I got to travel with all the new A/C being flight tested.  Al Hurst and family came over to see me at Edwards AFB.  I spent a lot of time at Edwards with various A/C.  I traveled a lot.  Most interesting trip was to South America.  Got to see Ray Wilson in Florida.  We were using the NASA runway for some testing we were doing.  Very hot and humid.  You needed pliers to unzip your pants..HI!!

I retired from Boeing in the summer of 1984.  Spent 17 years in a retirement community in AZ called Sun Lakes.  At the present time we are living with our daughter here in Indianapolis.  We had a nice Apt but she wanted us with her.  She was living alone and had plenty of room...so we are back in a house again.

My wife just turned 81 last July.  We have been married 61 years.  I married her in 1946 after WW2.  I was in the Navy from July 41 to Oct. 45...AF from Dec 47 to March 31, 1967....Long time ago.

I had a bad case of shingles when I arrived here in July 2004.  Broke out with them in Sept 04.  Had them in my head...Lots of pain etc.  I suggest everyone who is 60 years old should get a shot for them if he or she has had chicken pox as a kid...

Good website.  I was in 2ACCS as RO from June 74 til I retired Feb 78.   Reading the guestbook entries brought back a few faces to the names of all the really great folks.  I still have the photo the Air Force took of our Glass crew when we landed after the flight that completed 15 years of uninterrupted airborne alert  (Feb 3, 1976).

My second retirement was last year after teaching a quarter century.  (Dang, is everybody else getting as old as me?)

Hope to see many of you in Dayton next month.
